I would suggest getting only 2 sticks of ram.

I have a AMD Phenom II X4 955 C3 revision with a MSI 790FX board. The MCC on the Processor (Memory Controller) doesn't really like odd numbers of ram, nor does it do well to overclock with 4 sticks present. If you have the C2 revision, the MCC is even more finicky and it is difficult to overclock the ram to 1600+ without maxing out Northbridge voltage.

I would go with 2 x 2gb chips at 1600 mhz and you should be gravy.

Those 3 packs are generally for the new Intel i5/i7 chips b/c they utilize triple channel memory, hence the 3 pack deal.

I have these Gskill Ripjaws http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277

They are "designed" for the i7's, meaning they use much lower volage (around 1.6v) but work very well on my AMD board.

Make sure you get a decent power supply as well if you intend to overclock at all. A good name brand like corsair, antec, thermaltake, etc... are designed with power stability in mind and usually have good stable voltages.

EDIT: Also, with gaming on a x64 system, it will operate in 32bit mode and utilize only 2-3gbs of memory...usually, but as time progresses (and currently with some mods...like Cinematic Mod for half life 2) it will use 4gb's of ram running a x64 mode. Better to have it now than kick your self in the ass later...at least thats my motto.

MAJOR EDIT

If you haven't bought the processor yet, don't buy that one...its the C2 revision.

You want/need this one HDZ955FBGMBOX The C3 is a much better chip with a revision to the MCC and lower Vcore voltage to get a higher/stable OC

This is the C3 version http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808&Tpk=HDZ955FBGmBOX
